Creating a server instance makes a directory for the instance inside the nodes directory that is located under the <install_dir>. This is true irrespective of whether or not the server instance is a standalone or a clustered node.
The directory name is the same as the server instance name, or the node name. The node directory is the physical representation of the server instance identified by that node name.
